We’ve all heard the saying: failing to plan is planning to fail. While it might be a cliché, it’s especially relevant when it comes to off-road adventures. Few things are more frustrating than realizing you’ve left behind essential recovery gear or tools when you’re far from civilization. A solid plan isn’t just a concept; it needs execution. Creating checklists for gear and conducting shakedown runs can be the difference between a smooth trip and being stranded with your Bronco. With this mindset in mind, we applied the same philosophy to the development of our snorkel kit and decided to conduct our own shakedown run.
The Bronco is impressively equipped for off-road challenges straight from the factory, but it's not quite bulletproof. While Ford has taken steps to shield the intake from water and dust, these elements can still wreak havoc. To truly prepare your rig, moving the intake to a safer location is essential, and adding a snorkel is the most reliable solution to keep your Bronco’s engine protected during adventures.
Our design process allows us to bring even the smallest components, like the airbox adapter and coupler, to life. Using advanced tools like our Faro Design ScanArm, we created a precise digital replica of the Bronco’s front end to ensure a perfect fit. While these engineering tools are incredibly accurate, there’s no substitute for testing the design on the actual vehicle. To do this, we turned to our 3D printers to produce physical prototypes.
Even though performance testing isn’t the primary focus of this kit, we need to ensure the snorkel doesn’t negatively impact the Bronco’s power. Thanks to our fleet of 3D printers, we can quickly create functional prototypes that serve multiple purposes. Depending on the material and resolution, these prototypes are used to triple-check fitment and can even be tested on our flow bench, the road, or the dyno. Since this snorkel is more about durability and protection than horsepower gains, we’re skipping the more exhaustive performance tests conducted for our 2.3L and 2.7L intake kits, focusing instead on ensuring proper installation.
Precision is key, especially when cutting into the Bronco’s sheet metal. To perfect our cutting template, we acquired a spare fender and meticulously refined our approach.
